About the Musée des Maîtres et Artisans du Québec

Montreal’s Musée des Maîtres et Artisans du Québec (MMAQ) is an art museum in the borough of Saint-Laurent, north of the downtown core. The museum’s mission is to create awareness and promote the historical and contemporary craftspeople and artisans of Quebec while showcasing the high-quality handcrafts they create. The museum itself is a part of the Émile-Legault Pavillion on the campus of the Cégep de Saint-Laurent, a French language vocational college.    The museum’s main structure, a stunning example of High Victorian Gothic architecture, is actually a former Presbyterian church known as St-Paul’s, previously located near the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Downtown Montreal. The church was painstakingly removed piece by piece in 1931 and reinstalled in its current home where it served as a Catholic chapel for many years until becoming a museum in 1962.   Today, the MMAQ organizes themed seasonal exhibits with an emphasis on educational programs. They also feature an impressive permanent collection comprising over 14,000 objects, including tools, decorative objects, baskets, watches, ceramics, architectural details, furniture, and more.
